CHAPTER TWENTY

I did not follow my mother back into the café. Instead, I poked my head in the door and asked Hampton if he had a moment to speak to me alone.

He glanced over his shoulder as if he was looking for my mother as some sort of lifeline to pull him back into the café, but she was already on the opposite side of the café.

He stepped outside and let the door close behind him. “Miss Bailey, I know that you were surprised that your mother hired me to plan your wedding, but I can assure you that you are in very good hands. I will give you the wedding of your dreams.”

“You’re in Harvest just for the wedding planning?” I asked.

He blinked at me. “Why else would I be here? I can assure you I don’t have any other clients in your little village. The Amish aren’t calling me to plan their weddings.” He laughed at his own joke.

I wasn’t laughing. “Then what were you doing on the square yesterday?”

“On the square?” he asked.

I pointed at the square. “I remember seeing you there. You tend to stand out in Harvest.”

He smiled. “I always want to stand out, so thank you for that compliment.”

When he saw I wasn’t smiling, his tone became more serious. “I didn’t tell your mother this, but I have been here for about three days, researching all that Harvest has to offer. I want to know the viable options for your wedding. I spoke to venue owners, caterers, and salons in the county. It’s important to me that I use local vendors whenever possible for a wedding. It keeps costs down and helps the community.”

I wrinkled my brow and was partially placated by what he’d said. I thought it was important to use local vendors, too. Even so, I couldn’t stop myself from saying, “But you said you just arrived. As in you got here today.”

“Pish. ‘Just’ is a relative term. What I meant to say was I just arrived a few days ago. It makes no difference. I didn’t charge your parents for that time. It was my own research. This is such a picturesque place; I might encourage more of my brides to get married here. It could be a great, off-the-beaten-path location for a big wedding.” He removed his phone from his pocket and spoke into it. “Look into Amish Country weddings as a package to sell.” When he finished the voice note, he looked at me. “Was there anything else?” His eyes were bright behind his glasses.

I frowned. “I guess not.” Something about the way he spoke to me set me off balance, but I couldn’t put my finger on why. I was comfortable speaking to rich Upper East Side mothers and television producers. One would think that I wouldn’t be flummoxed by a wedding planner.

“Can you tell Juliet and my mother that I had to go back to work?”

“No problem at all. That might be better, really. Your mother and I can put a proposal together for you to review.
